AFA Division 4 - Halesowen Lighthouse 0 - 3 Shirley Athletic 3rds - 21/03/09
Shirley started the better of the two teams in difficult windy conditions having a couple of 'half chances ' but failing to convert . Then Halesowen woke up and decided to make a game of it mopping up some of the loose balls in midfield and trying to play the strikers through , but the Shirley defence held firm and a long clearance was spooned into the net by the Shirley winger 0 - 1 . Halesowen started the second half the better of the two teams but again the Shirley defence held strong , restricting the strikers to few chances . Shirley then made a couple of substitutions to freshen up the team and it paid dividend straight away when a neat cross from the right was turned in by one of the substitutes 0 - 2. Shirley kept pressing and another cross was finished off at the back post 0 - 3 . The Shirley substitute had a chance to claim a second half hat-trick but for a good save from the Halesowen keeper . Shirley thoroughly deserved the win and with a solid defensive display deserved the clean sheet as well .
AFA Bill Hill Cup Semi Final - Shirley Athletic 3rds 2 - 4 Silhill B
Shirley had a nightmare start to this game conceeding straight from there own kick off 0-1 . With added confidence the Silhill side looked to capitalise on Shirleys early blow by pushing on as much as possible and leaving no space for Shirley to play . Silhill then broke down the right and crossed the advancing striker beat both defenders and keeper to set up his partner to nod into an empty net 0-2 . Shirley then woke up creating a few half chances , but not really testing the Silhill keeper . Silhill then scored again with there midfielder quickest to react to a loose ball and finish first time 0-3 ,half time then came . Shirley were on top for a long period but were caught out when the ball got caught under the feet of the midfielder and the advancing Silhill attacker rounded the keeper to secure the tie 1-4 . Credit to Shirley they never gave up and pushed Silhill all the way to the end getting a late goal and coming close several times , but they will look back at this tie as a missed oppertunity being beat by an ' average ' Silhill side

This over zelous referee was trying to spoil the game for both teams as half time came with Shirley reduced to 10 men . Sportsco then had there own problems with only 10 men returning after the break due to injury . Shirley came out with wave after wave of attacks , then the break through . A neat pass and move through the middle was cut back and neatly finished off 4-3 . Shirley continued to attack and were rewarded with a goal , a good solo effort picked up and ran through then finished off superbly in the far corner 5-3 . AFA Minor Cup Semi Finals - Silhill 3rds 5 - 3 Shirley Athletic 3rds

Village D 2 - 3 Shirley Athletic 3rds - 15/11/08
After beating Village 4-1 earlier in the season, Shirley had high hopes of bagging 3 points so the ambience in the dressing room was buoyant. Shirley boss Dave Froggatt implemented a new formation of 4-4-2; this was shock to veteran sweeper Wayne Brown who now had to man mark and could not rely on the young whipper snappers to do his running for him. Village had a new look team with numerous new faces from their 1st and 2nd teams, Shirley new that this was going to be a hard game to win. A stern team talk enforced the need for 3 points and when Village kicked off Shirley were quick to the tackle and first to the ball. Once Shirley got hold of the ball they set the tempo of the game Andrew Previn would be proud of. It was all Shirley in the first 20 minuets with sharp 2 touch football and overlapping fullbacks and dominant midfield play, Shirley central pairing Wayne Brown and Ben Evans snuffed out any Village attacks. Ben was commanding in his new role and chatted and instructed the team for his out of breath partner. Shirley took the lead, deservedly so when a cross field pass from Brown found full back Craig Garnet who’s quick 1, 2 with Louie Baker opened up space in the village midfield Garnet then played the ball into Luke Froggatt. Luke beat his man with a sublime turn on the edge of the box, this enabled him to feed Kevin Bird and Birdie coolly slotted the ball into the top right hand corner giving the keeper no chance after 25 minuets. Shirley continued to put pressure the Village defence and both Shirley full backs Lee Chambers and Garnett were unlucky not to score. Birdie, Marshall, Baker and Woolly were unlucky not to add to the opening goal. Woolly was all over the pitch which was reminiscent of his 80’s dancing the previous night. Brown got his second wind just in time as Village started to force themselves back into the game, Shirley put themselves under pressure when it took Lee Chambers 15 headers to get 1 to go forward, which the crowd and his team mates gave him a cheer for. It took 7 minuets before half team for Village to have there first shot a Shirley attack broke down and with Garnet absent without leave left a hole at left back which Village exploited. The remaining Shirley back 4 shuffled across to try and quash the Village breakaway, the ball was played into the centre forwards feet who saw a run from his left back and played a neat ball into his path and the lack of marking from Marshall gave him a free shot at goal which he took and slotted past the Shirley keeper. Shirley could have gone into the break behind if it wasn’t for some great defensive play and tackling from Evan sthat Rio Ferdinand would have been proud of. After half time Shirley new that this game was there to won and they were the better side, they kicked off and again set the tempo. The sharp 2 touch football left Village chasing shadows and kicking ankles. Village couldn’t handle the closing down, harrying, passing and movement of Shirley. Shirley could of and should of quadrupled there lead with Dave Collins, Woolly, Froggatt, Birdie missing by inches or forcing fine saves. The glaring miss of the second half was from a Shirley corner which was cleared to Lee Chambers on the edge of the 18yard line, he swung with powerful left boot at the ball but the powder puff shot was not goal bound and it fell to Garnet who from 4 yards out did not have enough force in the shot to beat my Nan let alone the Village keeper. Shirley were luck not to be 2-1 down after village beat the offside trap and were through on goal, Chambers made up for his poor heading and shooting with his classic last ditch take the man, ball and half the pitch tackle just as the Village player was about to shoot. Shirley regained the lead after 70 minuets when great forward play between Marshall Trigger and Birdie forced desperate defending from Village, a poor clearance fell kindly to Woolly who lashed in a 25 yard drive past the rooted keeper. Shirley looked confident and with the introduction of David Sheridan into the midfield looked solid. Shirley undid all there smart football and hard work when they got caught on the counterattack looking for there 3rd goal. Again with too many players committed forward Village launched forward, the village attackers looked off side when the through ball went deep into the Shirley half but with not flag Brown, Evans, Chambers and Sheridan tried to clear the danger as the cross came in they were outnumbered and the ball bobbled off Sheridan’s knee and fell invitingly to a Village left midfielder who bundled the ball home. Shirley had 10 minuets to rescue the 3points; they changed the formation back to the usual 3-5-2 which gave the chance for Brown to breath and Shirley to pour forward in attack. It wasn’t long before Shirley regained the lead when Birdie picked up the ball just inside of the Village half and went and a Ronaldo, Giggs,Wright-Phillips like run beat 6 village players and his howitzer of a shot scorched past the village keeper and burnt the village net, the goal was nearly as good as his Nanni like flip celebration. There was no way back for village and it was a well deserved Shirley win. The man of the match went to Ben Evans with a solid, mature defensive display and he didn’t stop chatting for the full 90 minuets his around game was fantastic and he even headed the ball with his eyes open. On days like this you can understand why he was on Walsall FC books. 3 cheers for Ben…hip.hip..
C.P.A. H&N 5 - 1 Shirley Athletic 3rds - 08/11/08
B.T. 3 - 1 Shirley Athletic 3rds - 01/11/08
Swirling wind conditions were not the only thing that 3rds manager Dave Froggatt had to contend with. He was let down by 3 key players Danny Wall, Dave Collins and Dan Ridings hour an hour before kick off. Danny Wall was still inebriated from the night before, Dave Collins had hurt his ankle (rumoured to be on a shopping trip with his girlfriend) while Dan Ridings was too scared to call the manager himself so his got his mum to call to say that her little soldier was unable to play today as he hadn’t finished all of his baked beans at breakfast so he didn’t have the energy to play and he needed to tidy his bedroom before he could go out! Dave Froggatt recalled the midfield maestro Dave Sheridan to work his magic. BT kick off and immediately attacked the Shirley goal, Shirley seemed to still be in the dressing room as they BT ran rings around them. Within 5 minutes Shirley found themselves 1 goal down when Frank conceded a silly free kick just outside the box. The shot whizzed past the wall and veteran keeper Brin Baker could only parry the ball into the net. Shirley tried to play against the strong wind and BT’s harrying and hassling game which they found difficult. Shirley were 2 down within 15 minutes when poor marking from Frank gave his man time to peel away and slot the ball from 18 yards past the outstretched arm of Brin. Shirley tried to rally and stamp some authority onto the game but to no avail. BT were quicker and hungrier to the first and second ball, this coupled with there work rate off the ball had Shirley beat in the first 25 minuets. Shirley did have chances to score and could have got back into the but several dubious offside decisions. Shirley were 3 down by half time when a great turn and lob beat the Shirley full back keeper equally. After a stern talking to and the introduction of Shirley Leg end Rich Davies, Shirley battled and defended better in the second half as they started to try an restore some pride into a lacklustre first half performance. As they piled forward to score they left gaps and lived dangerously and could have found themselves more goals behind but for Brin who made several of his boy hood hero Gordon Banks like saves. Shirley had no luck in front of goal with Marshall, Bridie, Davies and Louie Baker within a cats whisker of scoring. Shirley got there consolation goal when Louie Baker beat 2 players but was cruelly scythed in the box before he could slot the ball home. He got up brushed himself down and coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. At least Shirley could say they won the second half of a poor display.
Bustleholme Athletic 4 - 3 Shirley Ath 3rds - 25/10/08
Shirley 3rds 4 - 1 Village ‘D’ - 18/10/08
After a weeks break Shirley looked forward to putting a run of wins together and welcomed Village to the Onward club. With a squad of 15 and 4 players out Shirley Manager Dave Froggatt had difficult decisions to make but as the grass had been cut he could pick his vertically challenged players. Still without a regular goalkeeper, Dave had to call upon the experienced veteran keeper Brin Baker to stand between the sticks. Shirley kicked off and looked comfortable as they knocked the ball around with more swagger than Oasis. Shirley’s two touch football left Village chasing shadows and Shirley where unlucky not to take the lead within the first 5 minute’s, when Kevin Bird and Pete Marshall going close. Shirley kept the ball well and didn’t surrender possession easily and further efforts from Danny Wall (Woolly), Adam Walker and Dave Collins kept Village penned back into their 18 yard box. Woolly was the Shirley linchpin he was playing every midfield position and his precision passing, work rate and skills were excellent. After 20 minutes Shirley decided to break the deadlock when a killer cross from Woolly was met by the advancing Kevin Bird who volleyed home from 18 yards. Shirley were 2 up after 25 minutes when some great one two’s between Collins, Marshall and Walker created a shooting opportunity for Bird who took it and forced a great save from the Village keeper but Walker was there to follow up. Walker nearly turned from goal hero to villain when a two footed lunge and a certain red card went unpunished by the referee. This seemed to give Village a new spurt of energy and they started to battle themselves back into the game. Shirley’s back line were equal to the task and were well marshalled and disciplined by John Terry like sweeper Wayne Brown. When village were lucky enough to get shots off, the agility of Shirley keeper Brin kept Village at bay with 3 Shilton like saves. Shirley made it 3 before half time when more neat play enabled Collins to thread the ball through to Richie Austin who turned on a dustbin lid beat 2 players and coolly slotted his shot into the bottom corner leaving the keeper no chance.
The second half was much the same as the first half with Shirley dominating the game and Woolly being instrumental as wave after wave of Shirley attacks crashed onto the Village shores. Shirley could have been 7 up with the chances that they created with Bird, Marshall, Woolly, Craig Garnett, Collins and Luke Froggatt all being guilty of missing great chances. Garnett should have made it 4 – 0 when he beat the offside trap to race onto a Froggatt through ball, with only the keep to beat Garnett fluffed his chance to put the game to bed when he had 3 chances to slot the ball past the aging Village keeper. Village scored their consolation goal when they counter attached and slack marking from Garnett gave his man the freedom of the pitch and more time than the speaking clock to slot the ball home. Shirley stood strong as Village tried and failed to get a second goal and wrapped the game up with 15 minutes to go when Bird unselfishly played in Marshall who rounded the keeper and slotted home from 8 yards into an empty net, if only Garnett could have done the same! If Woolly could have grabbed a goal it would have capped a perfect man of the match performance.
Sportsco 3 - 4 Shirley Athletic
Shirley Athletic 1 - 4 St. Annes - 27/09/08
Shirley new that it was going to be a difficult day at the office when they turned up and found the grass had not been cut at their home ground, Shirley manager Dave Froggatt were in fear of loosing Craig Garnett, Luke Froggatt, TJ and Ben Evens who are the vertically challenged members of the team. Both teams went all out attack in the opening 20 mins and it was Shirley who looked the more likely to score with Pete Marshall, Kevin Bird, Ben Evans and Luke Froggat forcing saves from the St Annes keeper. It was St Anne’s who broke the deadlock when a 20 yard hit and hope shot caught David Sheridan off his line. Things went from bad to worse when Shirley conceded a second goal following a Laurel and Hardy mix up between Lee Chambers and David Sheridan gifted the centre forward with an easy tap in. Shirley got themselves back in the game with hard work and lots of good attacking play when the influential Shirley sweeper Wayne Brown picked out a fine Froggat run, who crossed for Bird who force the ball home after 35 mins. Shirley were hoping to build on there goal but it wasn’t to be when St Anne’s restored there 2 goal advantage on the stoke of half time, when slack pressure on the ball from Shirley allowed a cross to be fired in and poor marking from Danny Ridings allowed his man to head home. Within 2 min of the restart another long ranged effort beat Sheridan and killed off any Shirley come back. This took the wind out Shirley sales but it did not stop them trying to impose their neat passing onto the game. If Shirley’s final ball had have been better in the last third and the forwards had have had a bit of luck they could have won the game but it wasn’t to be Shirley’s day as St Anne’s ran out 5-2 victors
Dosthill 5 - 2 Shirley Athletic - 20/09/08
Shirley started the game with high hopes of building on there opening day win, even without a recognised goalkeeper. In the opening encounters were full of confidence and vigour as the stroked the ball around playing neat, tidy football. They were unlucky not to go ahead in the first 10 minuets when Kevin Bird, Luke Froggatt and Dave Collins all going close. As Dosthill found their feet they became the driving force in the game with quick passing and good off the ball movement they soon found gaps in the Shirley midfield. Shirley defending as best as they could but were undone when the stand in goalkeeper Frank (normally centre half) spilled a tame 25 yard shot into the path of the grateful dosthill forward on 20min. Within a further 10 min Dosthill were 2 nil up when the lack of a Shirley pre-season training showed and Dosthill passed and move off the ball left the Shirley players chasing shadows and scored a well worked second goal. It was after the second goal Shirley decided to buck there ideas up and work hard for each other and got there rewards after 40min when the young 16 year old Jack Garrish finish neatly from some great interplay from Froggatt and Bird. Shirley tried but could not keep the deficit down to one goal at half time as they fell foul of there stand in keeper efforts who gifted Dosthill another goal in injury time of the first half to leave Shirley 3-1 down. After half time and a couple of substitutions Shirley sparked into life and took the game to Dosthill. Dosthill were under pressure as Shirley peppered there goal with dozens of shots from both forwards and the midfield quartet. Shirley could not find a break though and paid the price for missed chances when Dosthill counter attacked and scored a forth goal. Shirley were far from finished and again laid siege to the Dosthill goal and forced corner after corner. It was from these corners that Wayne Brown and Luke Froggatt had 2 goal bound volleys saved and Shirley were unlucky not to be level. They did pull a goal back when Lee Chambers delightful pass found an unmarked Kevin Bird whose pinpoint cross found then head of the on rushing Ben Evans and the ball flew into the top corner to make in 4-2. Evans was unfortunate not to double his account for day when his mazy run and thunderous drive left the dosthill keeper rooted to his line and the crossbar shaking. The crossbar was still shaking 10 mins later when Dosthill settled the game when they scored the final goal of the game after poor marking and slack off the ball running let Shirley down again.
